The roots of the annual Easter Jeep Safari stretch back to the late 1960s when the Moab Chamber of Commerce saw it as a way to welcome the Jeep community to rally on the Behind the Rocks Trail.
Through the years, Jeep enthusiasts continued to flock to Moab, Utah, to take their 4x4s on the rugged trails and grow the event into one of the highest-profile Jeep rallies of the year.
It has also been the perfect location for the past 16 years for Jeep designers and engineers to showcase concept vehicles and accessories, and this year is no exception.
“Being close to these type of enthusiast-driven events is really important for us,” said Mark Allen, Head of Jeep Design, FCA – North America. “We get to build these vehicles, take them out there and drive them in their habitat. That is priceless.”
Five of the concepts at this week’s 52nd Annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari are based on the iconic Jeep Wrangler, which is the “core” of the Jeep brand. These capable, colorful and cool vehicles not only look good when they are on display, but they are also capable enough to tackle the trails in Moab.
“They are not like the show cars we used to do that ended up at a big auto show on the turntable,” said Allen, as he discussed the fully functioning concept vehicles. “They absolutely have to be functioning, and they look good too!”
Attending the Easter Jeep Safari is not only a great opportunity for the brand to give back to its customers, enjoy the social side of off-roading and connect with Jeep owners, but it is also an opportunity to test some items that may be in future Jeep vehicles.
“For us it’s almost like a real, live lab where we are experimenting, getting feedback and formulate plans for the future,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand, FCA. “We are with our customers and our friends, which is always fantastic, and we are learning things for the future. What could be better than that?”
